"Blessing of the Hounds
Although the name suggests a species-specific focus, the long-standing tradition of Blessing of the Hounds encompasses more than just hounds since it includes all animals and humans involved in the hunt. The blessing practice dates back to the Eighth Century and to celebrations associated with St. Hubert. English hunters popularized this ritual and brought the custom to the American colonies in the Seventeenth Century.
Over a thousand people attended the 76th Anniversary of the Blessing of the Hounds at Grace Episcopal Church in Keswick, Virginia. The blessing tradition established by this Colonial church back in 1929 is extended to riders, horses, hounds and even the fox (in absentia). During the anniversary, bagpipes played as Reverend Julie Norton, rector, prayed, “For the horses to be surefooted, the hounds to be swift and disciplined, and the foxes to be fleet of foot and elusive...”
