Groundhog Gala
"Groundhog Day occurs halfway between the winter solstice and spring equinox. In the United States, wild and wacky groundhog "weathermen" stick their necks out to make weather predictions early in the year. Real animals, these groundhogs "forecast" the end of winter or beginning of spring in an old tradition linked to Candlemas. The most famous weather-predicting groundhog is Punxsutawney Phil, although unconfirmed rumors indicate that Connecticut Chuckles launched a campaign to usurp him.
Fans and residents in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania celebrate annually. Since 1887 Phil has made his prediction at Gobblers Knoll, where thousands turn out to watch. Phil's notoriety earns him an entourage of staff members. In addition to his "inner circle," an official scribe, media liaison, and escorts for his meeting with White House dignitaries form the personnel surrounding him..."
